I Want To Be Happier. What To Do?

We’ve all heard that happiness is a state of mind, but what does that actually mean? Our happiness depends upon many factors, some of which are beyond our control.

Sometimes it feels like in life in 2019, happiness is harder to grasp than ever. With our smartphones buzzing with responsibilities every 30 seconds, everyone is constantly overbooked and over-stressed. It’s no coincidence that there have been articles abound about burnout the past few months. But is there a way to have a happy busy life? In times like these, it’s crucial to take a step back to re-evaluate how you spend your time so that you can find the right work-life balance and hopefully even save yourself some time in your day.

Sure, it’s easy to say that a new car or perhaps a promotion at work will bring you joy, but those feelings are like a temporary high. Long-lasting happiness isn’t something to be attained through outside influences – it starts and ends within yourself. The constant pursuit of happiness ends when you make the conscious choice to be grateful for what you already have and stop seeking what you do not.

That being said, not all people experience happiness alike and our levels of happiness all fluctuate no matter how mindful and thankful we are – it requires acceptance, patience, forgiveness, and devotion through all of life’s ups and downs.

Not sure where to start? Don’t worry, we’ve done a little digging and found the five most important factors related to happiness.

THE 5 MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS AFFECTING HAPPINESS

Think Positive Thoughts

I’m sure you’ve heard about the power of positive thinking once or twice, and I’m here to tell you that the rumors are true – the nature of your thoughts absolutely defines the quality of your life. We can’t always change our circumstances, but we can always change our way of viewing them. The benefits of a positive attitude are limitless and encompass all other factors which determine our ability to be happy.

Health & Wellness

Not only is positive thinking good for your mental health, but it can also keep your body healthy and protect you from certain diseases. However, that doesn’t necessarily protect our loved ones from facing health concerns. Whether it’s your wellbeing or someone else’s, matters of health create immense stress in the body, and the best thing you can do to alleviate that tension is practice some self-care. The first step is to create some time in your day to take care of yourself, and then pick a self-care routine that fits you best; it could be taking a relaxing bath, experimenting with new healthy recipes, expressing yourself creatively, or getting a little exercise in!

Quality Interpersonal Relationships

Being the social creatures that humans are, it’s no surprise that the quality of our relationships is deeply tied to our emotional and physical wellbeing. Several studies have demonstrated that the happiest participants are those with strong, supportive social connections. Therefore, developing and maintaining meaningful relationships with others is just as important as diet and exercise.

Time to Rest and Restore

A good night’s rest is imperative to living a happier life – I mean, who enjoys running on little to no sleep anyways? Take time to rejuvenate, and your body will thank you with a sunnier disposition! If losing sleep is inevitable, try meditating or practicing some restorative yoga to help your body unwind and recharge.

Occupational and Residential Security

It’s true, money can’t buy lasting happiness (and it can even be toxic to our well being in some cases), but it definitely does matter up to a certain point. Feeling financially stable, as well as gratified by the work you do and where you live, brings peace of mind, which ultimately leads to a brighter outlook.

“Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony”, Mahatma Gandhi.

Of course, we can’t control everything in our lives, and some aspects may be impossible to change. But hopefully, these tips remind you that the foundation of happiness is all about understanding, appreciating, and taking care of yourself.
